Professor Garrett Putney began his grappling journey in 2010, first developing his competitive foundation through high school wrestling before fully immersing himself in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His wrestling background continues to influence his coaching and competitive philosophy, emphasizing pressure, positional control, and strong fundamentals.
Garrett earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt in October 2021 under the Carlos Machado Jiu-Jitsu affiliation. He was later promoted to brown belt in October 2023 through the Double Five Jiu-Jitsu association. In October 2025, he earned his Black Belt under John Atkins, representing the lineage of Octavio Cuoto / Rafael Lang.
Professor Garrett began coaching in 2020, initially teaching children’s classes, where he quickly developed a reputation for high-energy instruction, structured learning environments, and strong student development. Over the years, he has served as head coach at two academies, leading programs for multiple years and helping build thriving communities on and off the mats.
He has successfully created and grown highly regarded kids programs known for their balance of discipline, fun, and technical progression. Working with students as young as three years old, Professor Garrett utilizes an adaptive coaching style tailored to each student’s learning pace, personality, and goals. His approach focuses on building confidence, resilience, and character alongside technical skill.
Today, Professor Garrett Putney is dedicated to developing athletes of all ages and experience levels, fostering a positive academy culture rooted in respect, hard work, and lifelong growth through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
