Do I need experience to start Jiu Jitsu?
No experience is needed at all. Most people who start at Ground Control Jiu Jitsu in Garland are brand new. We’ll guide you through everything step by step so you feel comfortable from your first class.
What should I expect in my first class?
You’ll be introduced to basic movements and techniques in a structured class. No pressure, no expectations—just show up ready to learn. Our coaches will help you every step of the way.
Do I need to be in shape before starting?
Not at all. Getting in shape is one of the reasons people start Jiu Jitsu. You’ll build strength, conditioning, and endurance naturally as you train.
What’s the difference between Gi and No Gi?
Gi classes use the traditional uniform and focus more on grips and control. No Gi is faster-paced and focuses on movement and positioning. At our Garland academy, you can train both to build a complete skill set.
How often should I train?
Most beginners start with 2–3 classes per week. As you get more comfortable, you can train more often. Consistency is what really drives progress.
Is Jiu Jitsu good for self-defense?
Yes. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the most effective forms of self-defense, especially in close-range situations. You’ll learn how to control and protect yourself in real-world scenarios.
Do you offer classes for kids?
